This week learn how to tap into the vast knowledge store your mind has, so you can show up and behave like the person you want to be, or simply assume a useful mindset for the day.
You will find out how to deliver more easily, adopt a mindset that is helpful or get advice on a challenge – all using the same technique.
Most people are unaware of this inbuilt capability. Worse they give themselves an image of the person they don’t want to be, not realising the unconscious mind uses this as an instruction of what you do want. Classic case of “be careful what you wish for”.
Let’s go for it, the journey might seem a bit strange but hang in there.
Your personal advisor.
Let’s start thus concept by creating an image in your mind of someone you admire.
Either a fictional character you admire, someone in the real world you admire, or even better, the genuine best version of yourself.
Once you have this person clearly captured in mind, you can ask them advice on a situation.
Even better in your mind you can merge with them, by walking into them to take on their skills, thinking, attributes and all the aspects that will make you feel better and more able to accomplish what you set out to achieve.
This might all seem a bit strange, but in fact it is very scientific, why?
We know our unconscious responds the same way to real or imagined events.
We know the best way to communicate with the unconscious part of our mind is through images and emotion.
We know our bodies chemistry is altered by how we think and our posture.
We know our minds have a vast store of information, so when we bring a profile of who we want to behave like, our unconscious takes this as an instruction and creates an identikit, using its vast data base of knowledge. Revealing to us how we should be and how we should behave.
You at your best.
When you think back through your life there were certain times when you were absolutely the best version of yourself, everything was focused and aligned. How great would it be to be able to tap into that whenever you want, well you can?
You might say, I cannot remember a time like that, well even if you are hard on yourself, I cannot believe that is the case.
If it truly was, do not concern yourself, you can make up the best version of yourself in your mind. Why? Because your unconscious mind cannot tell the difference between reality and fantasy, it responds the same way to both.
Your unconscious also has stored away what it took for you to be the best version of yourself in past exploits, all the learning and information is there.
Our minds record everything we have ever done, lots of it is in long term storage for recall as and when required. If you ask your unconscious to go and find it for you, it will. When you observe others, we can take on learning from this, unconsciously without active thought.
You can use this technique to tap into a general version of you at your best or a very specific activity you want to undertake.
Before you start the exercise recall either a time when you were at your best that is relevant to what you want to achieve today or create an imaginary scenario of you being at your best.
You can be specific or general. It might be you want to recall a time you completed a great negotiation, in time for a new negotiation you are undertaking soon.
Or you may wish to remember a time you really excelled like running a marathon or going down a zip wire and you want to take that winning feeling into the day to energise you.
So what? – the technique explained.
If you find you need to give yourself a boost of confidence perhaps before an important meeting, this is a great technique.
Here is what you do,
Find a place you can be undisturbed and safe to carry out this exercise.
NB Make sure you are safe not operating anything, as you will need to go into a daydream state to do this.
Quiet your mind and take deep breaths in, hold these breaths for a few counts and then release slowly, do this 5-6 times.
Imagine scanning your body from your feet up to your head and as the scan moves along imagine that part of your body relaxing.
Quiet your mind and take yourself in your mind, to somewhere special to you that makes you feel happy and safe.
In your mind conjure up an image of you. You as your best version of yourself either for a specific task you are about to undertake or a time you really excelled or just a generalisation of you being at your best.
If you cannot recall such a time, make up an image of you as you imagine you would be operating at your best (remember your unconscious does not know the difference between real and imagined).
Make the image as clear as possible use visuals, sound, feelings, emotions even better if you can add smell. Use sub modalities like colour and movement to make the mini movie come to life. Create this as if you were watching yourself.
Add as much detail as possible, what surrounds you, who if anyone is near you, what colours, what sounds, what feeling e.t.c.
Make the image brighter, make the sounds louder, feel the emotion even stronger. Just really indulge in that moment. Relive you doing a great job.
Once you really feel, see and hear and sense this image you can ask yourself advice on a situation or ask yourself to find a solution and get back to you. I imagine the best version of myself opposite to me looking directly at me, stood up. You can choose where the scene is in your mind and how the best version of you is positioned.
Conjure up an image of your version of your best self, walking towards you.
As your best version of yourself gets closer to you, ask them for advice on what you should do to achieve the specific task or objective you have in mind.
Then after you have heard that advice, in your mind walk towards the best version of yourself.
Then slowly walk into the image of your best self, combine with them and merge, let the sensation wash over you, so you feel, hear, see, taste, smell and think what the best version of yourself senses.
Engage with this sensation for as long as you need and then gently come to, from your daydream state, feeling absolutely wonderful and fully on top of your game.
Reflect on the experience and how that feels and what learning you took from it.
For example, if you are a little anxious about running an important meeting, either choose a memory of when you last had a great meeting or make one up in your mind, doing all the things you want to do in the meeting and it going really well.
Or imagine someone you admire who runs meetings really well.
You may be reading this thinking, this is really strange and feeling a little skeptical, try it.
By bringing the best version of yourself to mind you are commanding your unconscious to bring to mind what it took for you to be brilliant that time, it brings all the neural pathways to those memories together in one place.
By walking into that version of yourself in your mind, you are not going on some mystical journey, simply commanding your unconscious to release the learning into your conscious mind for you to use. This is all about neuroscience and tapping into how our amazing minds work.
Keep practicing bringing this real or imagined scene with associated feelings, images and sound to mind. Each time you do this you will get a stronger sensation.
When you feel the need to get motivation to achieve a task or you find yourself comparing yourself to others, find somewhere safe and use your triggers to instigate this feeling.
Imagine the best version of yourself standing in front of you. Ask yourself for advice and encouragement. When you are ready in your mind walk into and meld with the best version of yourself, feel what they feel, see what they see, hear what they see and think what they think.
This is a powerful exercise to not only stop your comparison to others but trigger a new response to be and experience being the best version of yourself.
Choose to benefit from the best version of yourself.
