MSS #0161: Why Setting a Wish Rarely Changes a Habit

šRead time: 3.4 minutes
š In a hurry? Jump to āThe 3 Ways to Rewire a Habitā for a 1.7-minute read.
Most habits donāt fail because you donāt want them badly enough.
They fail because the part of your mind that actually runs habits never got involved.
We set intentions.
We make promises.
We say, āThatās the last time.ā
And thenā¦
we do the same thing again.
Because hereās the uncomfortable truth:
Conscious wishes donāt create habits.
The unconscious mind does.
Let me show you what I mean with something very ordinary.
ā My morning coffee.
The Missed Moment
This morning, I noticed I was doing it again.
I made my coffee.
I sat down.
And without thinkingā¦
I went straight back to work.
Another small moment of calm ā gone.
My conscious mind protested:
āYou should slow down.ā
āYou deserve a pause.ā
āEnjoy this.ā
None of it worked.
Because the habit wasnāt conscious.
It was automatic.
So instead of making another wish, I changed the system underneath.
The Coffee Sanctuary (A Habit Rewire in Action)
This time, coffee wasnāt just a drink.
It became a 5-minute sanctuary ā and I set it up to speak the language of the unconscious mind.
Hereās how.
The 3 Ways to Rewire a Habit
1. Change the Environment
Coffee is now drunk away from my work area.
No laptop.
No phone.
No notifications.
Just a different chair.
A different view.
A different signal.
Your brain follows environment faster than intention.
New space = new rules.
2. Pre-Load the Mind
One danger moment is sitting down and thinking:
āWhat do I think about now?ā
If you donāt decide, your brain will default to work.
So, I give it a path before I sit down:
⢠Remember my last holiday
⢠Picture something Iām looking forward to
⢠Think of someone who makes me laugh
⢠Relive a favourite moment
⢠Dream up a future adventure
When you choose your thoughts, you shift your emotions.
When you shift your emotions, habits start to change.
3. Make Progress Visible
Beside the kettle, thereās a simple tally chart.
Each completed coffee sanctuary gets a tick.
No apps.
No dashboards.
No optimisation.
Just something the unconscious mind can see.
Consistency isnāt built on willpower.
Itās built on what feels rewarding and familiar.
Why This Actually Works
Habits donāt respond to lectures.
They respond to repetition, emotion, and context.
This tiny ritual:
⢠feels good
⢠looks different
⢠and rewards itself
Thatās how the unconscious mind learns.
Five minutes a day.
No forcing.
No discipline battles.
Just letting the habit grow roots.
The Bigger Point
Small sanctuaries donāt just change your mood.
They quietly retrain your mind to:
⢠notice the good
⢠slow the rush
⢠and create space automatically
Thatās real habit change.
Not through wishing.
Through design.
Summary
⢠Conscious wishes rarely change habits
⢠Habits live in the unconscious mind
⢠Change the environment first
⢠Pre-load the thoughts you want
⢠Make progress visible and rewarding
⢠Small rituals, repeated, rewire everything
Over to you:
